Military History Weekend 2012 W. Britain Collectors Event

MHW figureMilitary History Weekend 2012 is right around the corner! We’re looking forward to presentations by notable veterans, seeing the living historians and vintage vehicles, and of course The Toymaker of Williamsburg and W. Britain Annual Open House.

In conjunction with the weekend events, W. Britain will host a can’t-miss collectors’ event! The Military Enthusiast & W. Britain Collectors Evening Event will take place on Saturday October 13th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The W. Britain collectors’ event will include dinner, drinks, guest speakers, and a special event figure. This year’s guest speakers are authors Monte Akers and Joe Wallis. The Military Enthusiast & W. Britain Collectors Evening Event gives attendees the rare opportunity to hear about their work and speak with these renowned authors.

Mr. Monte Akers is the author of Year of Glory: The Life and Battles of Jeb Stuart and His Cavalry, June 1862–June 1863 (Casemate Publishers, 2012). Mr. Akers is an attorney practicing in Austin, Texas but his passion since childhood has been American history, particularly the Civil War. That passion has led him to become a collector of artifacts, a relic hunter, a song writer, a re-enactor, a movie extra, and the author, in addition to Year of Glory, of the following books: Flames After Midnight: Murder, Vengeance, and the Desolation of a Texas Community (University of Texas Press, 1999 & 2011); Tales for the Telling: Six Short Stories of the Civil War on CD (Cold Creek Productions: 2005), The Accidental Historian: Tales of Trash and Treasure, (Texas Tech University Press: 2010). He was a featured author at the Texas Book Festival in 2011, and is a frequent speaker at state and national legal conferences, a former Adjunct Professor for Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) University, and is the author of numerous legal papers and articles regarding municipal law, water law, environmental law, utility law and related topics.

It is also our honor to have renowned W. Britain authority and author of Regiments of All Nations Joe Wallis on hand to discuss W. Britain figures from 1946 to 1966. Mr. Wallis’ first published ROAN in 1981 and released a hardback color version of this classic last year. His knowledge of this period in W. Britain’s long history is without peer.

The 2012 Military History Weekend event figure (above) depicts a British Ensign of the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot, Regimental Colour in 1815. This special event figure, limited to 450 pieces, is valued at $38.00 and included in the evening event ticket price.

If you are a toy soldier collector or just interested in military history join us for this special event. Tickets for this event are $55 per person (for W. Britain Collectors Club members) and $60 per person (for non-club members) and can be purchased directly from W. Britain at 1-888-771-5576 (toll-free from the USA only) or 1-563-582-2071. This year’s event is being held at the Holiday Inn Patriot, 3032 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. Special room reservation rate of $89 just mention the show when you call 1-800-446-6001.

You will want to reserve your spot at the Military Enthusiast & W. Britain Collectors Evening Event as soon as possible; this popular event is filling up quickly! If the event has not sold out, tickets will also be available at The Toymaker of Williamsburg and W. Britain Open House as well as at Military History Weekend.

Talk Like A Pirate Day!

Happy International Talk Like A Pirate Day! September 19 is the official celebration of “aarghs” and “shiver me timbers” and “mateys”. This year (2012) marks the 10th anniversary of the worldwide celebration of this event.

Talk Like A Pirate Day began in June of 1995. While exercising, creators John Baur and Mark Summers started talking in pirate slang and recognized the benefit of this silly and entertaining lingo. They identified the worldwide need for this squash buckling slang – at least once a year – and declared it a holiday. They assigned the date September 19 to this event and decided the perfect spokesperson would be Dave Barry, humor columnist and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. The second part of their plan didn’t become a reality until many years later.

For the next seven years, the founders celebrated Talk Like A Pirate Day just with friends until one day they discovered Dave Barry’s email address. They contacted him and introduced themselves and their idea in the email then offered Barry a chance to be official spokesperson for the event. Dave Barry took them up on their offer and brought attention to the event in 2002. It has been a growing success ever since.

Why celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day? It’s fun! Ahoy, Arr, Yarr Matey…

Starrrrt celebrating now! Draw out those Arrrrrs and check out pirate necessities from The Toymaker below. For more background about International Talk Like A Pirate Day see the official website now.

Roald Dahl Day

Happy Roald Dahl Day! On this day in 1916, Roald Dahl, famous author, was born in Llandaff, Wales. As a boy, Roald loved stories and books. Some of Dahl’s most important childhood memories are of trips to the sweet shop. He also had a difficult time when he went away to boarding school that was led by a daunting headmaster. No doubt, these two memories planted seeds for some of Roald’s most beloved works: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.

As a young adult, Dahl signed up for the Royal Air Force in Nairobi. Recounting the events of his experiences in the Royal Air Force sparked the beginning of his successful career as a writer. Dahl spent the early years of his writing career creating stories for adults. His stories were often described as humorous and dark. It wasn’t until Roald was a father himself that he shifted his writing focus to children’s works.

Dahl began writing books for children after he started making up bedtime stories for his two daughters. He has been called the most successful children’s writer in the world. Some of his well-known works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Roald died on November 23rd 1990 at the age of 74. Since his death, his books have maintained their popularity. His most popular works are known around the world and continue to be sold worldwide.

Roald Dahl Day began in 2006 and is now celebrated each year worldwide.

How should you celebrate? With a good book of course! Stop by the Toymaker to see the newly released Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl. Read details about this unforgettable book below!

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox is available as a full-color picture book for the first time!

Someone’s been stealing from the three meanest farmers around, and they know the identity of the thief–it’s Fantastic Mr. Fox! Working alone they could never catch him, but now Boggis, Bunce, and Bean have joined forces, and they’ve concocted a cunning plan to dig him out of his hole once and for all. What they don’t know is they’re not dealing with just any fox. Mr. Fox would rather die than surrender, and he just happens to have a fantastic plan of his own.
